Shot over a four-year period, this documentary follows the residents of Chicago's best known public housing development as their homes are marked for destruction in the interest of urban gentrification. Infamous for poverty, gangs, drugs, and
violence - Cabrini Green is also home to a strong community
of African-American residents - many of whom are fighting
to stay.
"Terse, informative, and convincing" -
Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader (Critics Choice)
"A compelling narrative of a community in the grips
of major change and crisis" - Melita Marie Garza, Chicago Tribune
Voices of Cabrini is a collaboration between
filmmakers Ronit Bezalel and filmmaker
Antonio Ferrara. The documentary was made possible
through the generous support of executive producer Judy Hoffman
and associate producers Tanja Deshida and Mark Pratt.
Through a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Grant,
Bezalel and executive producer Judy Hoffman screened
Voices of Cabrini: Remaking Chicago's Public Housing
throughout Chicago. The video was shown in a series of
eight community forums in neighborhoods where people are
being displaced and relocated.
As a result of this tour,
Newsweek Magazine (January 2001) honored Ronit
Bezalel as one of the Top 15 Women of the 21st
Century.
In production: an update to Voices of Cabrini - ten years later. Please stay tuned.
